"It was the stereotypical high school meet-cute: An immature boy walks into Spanish class and sits down, laughing at a friend's joke and already thinking about how much time was left in the day. All of a sudden, a girl walks in and sits down next to him. And just like that, with a gentle flip of her hair, he becomes hers. He nervously, yet romantically, asks her out the next month when he’s mustered enough courage to ignore the jeers he’s sure to get from his friends (because it is, after all, high school). She mercifully says yes and thus begins many happy years of courtship. Soon enough, both cannot wait to get married and start their lives together–and that’s how we arrive at this point, when you’re reading this. At least, that’s what we would have you believe :)
In reality, we were both stubborn, ambitious high school freshmen when we met each other, and neither of us really had any plans of dating until we were safely into the college of our dreams like the good Indian children that we were. Between studying and badminton, Shreya had just enough time to gossip about the Indian boys of our year and laugh at the torn shirts and parted hair that Monil was known for back in the day. Monil, on the other hand, simply rolled his eyes every time he passed Shreya and her friends giggling in the hallways. He really only cared about schoolwork and playing basketball with his friends every Friday. That was why he was totally blindsided when they were eating ice cream with a few of their close friends and she threw a football at him asking him to Turnabout during the winter of our Junior year. It only took one dance for Shreya to win him over, and after the night was over, Monil asked her out just before he dropped her home (2 houses away so her parents wouldn’t find out). While we’ve been dating, we’ve done it all: gone to Prom together, dated throughout college, celebrated numerous birthdays and anniversaries together and even handled a long-distance relationship when Shreya worked in Boston. The upside is we know almost everything there is to know about each other. The downside is it’s getting really hard to surprise each other for birthdays!
But between Shreya’s fun-loving nature and Monil’s levelheadedness, we’ve been inseparable for the last seven years. We’ve had a chance to grow together and mature as a couple in a way that most couples haven’t, and after college we knew that we’d eventually want to marry each other. It was pretty difficult for Monil to surprise Shreya when he proposed, but he did his best pretending they were just going on a normal date. On the way home, though, he took a detour to the park halfway between their houses that they used to sneak off to in high school and proposed. Impossible to say no to Monil, Shreya, of course, said yes!"
